Body Constitution Guide
Sasang Constitution (四象體質) is a traditional Korean medicine theory developed by the scholar Lee Je-ma during the late Joseon dynasty. It classifies people into four constitutional types — Taeyang-in, Taeum-in, Soyang-in, and Soeum-in — and recommends personalized food, exercise, and lifestyle habits for each type. The same food or remedy may affect different constitutions differently, reflecting a traditional approach to personalized wellness.
How It Works
According to Lee Je-ma's 'Donguisusebowon', each person has different organ strengths and weaknesses. Taeyang-in has strong lung function but weaker liver; Taeum-in has strong liver but weaker lungs. Soyang-in has strong digestion but weaker kidneys; Soeum-in has strong kidneys but weaker digestion.
Constitution diagnosis considers build, personality, digestion, body temperature tendency, sweat patterns, and stress response. Our questionnaire is a simplified self-assessment tool; for an accurate diagnosis, consulting a traditional Korean medicine practitioner is recommended.
Taeyang-in (Greater Yang)
Strong energy and decisive personality. Lung function is well-developed but liver function may be weaker.
Recommended foods: Buckwheat, grapes, seafood, light vegetables, quince tea
Foods to limit: Spicy and stimulating foods, ginseng, deer antler
Lifestyle tips: Meditation and light walks are ideal. Calm, reflective activities suit this constitution better than intense exercise.
Taeum-in (Greater Yin)
Large build with strong endurance. Liver function is well-developed but lung function may be weaker.
Recommended foods: Job's tears, beans, beef, bellflower root, seaweed, apples
Foods to limit: Excess oily food, late-night snacking, processed food
Lifestyle tips: Regular aerobic exercise is essential. Activities that promote sweating help circulation and overall health.
Soyang-in (Lesser Yang)
Active and tends to run warm. Digestive function is strong but kidney function may be weaker.
Recommended foods: Barley, cucumber, watermelon, mung beans, seafood, pears
Foods to limit: Excess ginseng, honey, chicken, alcohol
Lifestyle tips: Swimming, walking, and lower-body exercises are recommended. Staying well-hydrated is important.
Soeum-in (Lesser Yin)
Tends to have weak digestion and feel cold. Kidney function is strong but digestive function may be weaker.
Recommended foods: Glutinous rice, potatoes, jujube, ginger tea, spinach, chicken
Foods to limit: Excess cold drinks, wheat products, raw vegetables, watermelon
Lifestyle tips: Regular meals with warm foods are key. Light walks and yoga are well-suited to this constitution.

Online questionnaires are a reference tool for identifying tendencies. For an accurate diagnosis, professional assessment by a traditional Korean medicine doctor is recommended.
Q. Should I avoid foods not recommended for my type?
Constitution-based food guides are suggestions, not strict prohibitions. A balanced diet is most important; use constitution food recommendations as a supplementary reference.
